About Salwa Palace

Salwa Palace is a historical landmark that encapsulates a crucial time in the history of the Kingdom, for it stands as a window with a view that takes you back in time to the establishment of the First Saudi State. It offers a chance to discover centuries-old architecture. It was given this name because its construction has multiple uses, making it a consolation for its residents and visitors. Salwa Place is located on the northeastern side of the Turaif District. Positioned at the forefront, Salwa Place is one the most prominent landmarks at the district’s entrance. In 1766 AD, Imam Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad ibn Saud built this ancient historical monument to be the home of the state and the headquarters for AlSaud’s princes and imams. It has witnessed essential milestones in the history First Saudi State; the unification of most of the Arabian peninsula, the orders to comply with the teachings of Islam issued from it; and halls dedicated to councils of science, culture, and religious education on its grounds. As one of the largest palaces in Diriyah, Salwa palace extends over an area of 10,000 square meters and includes seven multi-floor residential units. The immaculate and firm distinctive structure was built in successive stages to reach its current massive lofty state. Next to the palace is an open court used to receive guests. The floors are paved with stones, and there is a high thick wall on the southern side that holds a bridge connecting Salwa to the Turaif Mosque. The Palace’s facades have decorative triangular windows designed for ventilation and to bring natural light into the rooms, not to mention the decorative aesthetical appearance they add to the place. The palace is surrounded by the Bait Al Mal (the state treasury), Al-Tarif Mosque, and a well that used to supply the residents of the palace with water. You will take a journey back in time inside the Diriyah Museum of Salwa Place. The museum showcases handwritten manuscripts, ancient artefacts, and the royal family tree. In addition, the museum displays informative presentations on the history and stages of the First Saudi state.
